Transporters, unions, and parking operators are urging the European Commission to promote secure and protected truck parking areas in the EU over the next three years. The safety of professional drivers and the goods they transport largely depends on the places where they must take their mandatory daily breaks. It is essential to be able to rest in a monitored area with available services to avoid risks such as cargo theft. This is the daily reality faced by transportation professionals, and it is what the European Federation of Transport Workers (ETF), the International Road Transport Union (IRU), and the European Secure Parking Organization (ESPORG) have conveyed to the EU Transport Commissioner, Adina Vălean, in a letter. Furthermore, they argue that establishing a network of safe and monitored parking areas is crucial to address the shortage of drivers in the EU and make the profession more attractive. These organizations advocate for the modernization and development of new safe and sustainable truck parking areas, thus contributing to a stronger European network. Raluca Marian, Director of Promotion at the IRU in the EU, emphasized the importance of expanding this network throughout the EU and urged member states and local authorities to prioritize driver working conditions and cargo security. Additionally, she is optimistic about the continued support of the European Commission in improving these essential facilities under the next Transport Commissioner.
