Germany leads Spain’s fruit and vegetable exports with 27% of the total, followed by France and the Netherlands. These three countries maintain stable volumes and values compared to previous years. Spanish exports of these products to Germany reached 2.2 million tons and 3,632 million euros until September 2023, representing approximately a third of the total exported (27% in volume and 29% in value), according to data from the Customs Department. and Special Taxes processed by FEPEX.
The German market remains the main destination for Spanish fruit and vegetable exports, with percentages similar to previous years. In 2022, Spain sold 3.1 million tons and 4.44 billion euros in Germany, which represented 26% of the total exported volume and 28% of the value.
France occupies second place as a destination for Spanish fruits and vegetables, covering 18% of the volume exported until September 2023, with 1.4 million tons and 2,066 million euros. The Netherlands is the third market in the EU, with 645,163 tons and 1 million euros, followed by Italy, with 482,745 tons and 660,942 euros.
These four countries represent 60% of the total exported until September 2023, underlining the importance of the community market for the Spanish sector. Sales of fresh fruits and vegetables to the EU in the period from January to September 2023 totaled 6.9 million tons and 10,170 million euros, equivalent to 83% of the total.
If Spain’s fruit and vegetable exports to other European countries such as the United Kingdom, Norway and Switzerland are added, the sales figure outside Europe represents only 3%. FEPEX highlights the difficulty of access for Spanish and European productions to countries outside the European continent.
